A road trip is one of the best ways to see the United States, and also the place where you are most likely to lose signal. Knowing where coverage drops out — and preparing for it — makes the drive easier and safer.

Where coverage is strong

Your USA eSIM uses the Verizon and AT&T networks. In and around cities and towns you can expect fast 4G LTE and often 5G. Most interstate highways between major cities are covered too, although there can be short gaps in mountain passes and long empty stretches.

Where to expect gaps

  • National parks: in large parks such as Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier or Grand Canyon, signal is usually limited to villages, lodges and visitor centers. Trails, canyons and back roads often have none.
  • Deserts and the Southwest: long stretches between towns in Nevada, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico can be out of coverage.
  • Mountains and coastal roads: winding routes such as parts of the Pacific Coast Highway have patchy signal where the road runs between cliffs and the sea.

Prepare before you lose signal

  • Download offline maps in Google Maps for every region on your route; navigation keeps working offline.
  • Download park maps and information in the NPS App while you still have data.
  • Save your accommodation details and reservations as screenshots or offline documents.
  • Fill up the tank before long empty stretches and carry water.
  • Tell someone your route and when you expect to arrive.

Emergencies

Dial 911 in an emergency. Phones can usually reach emergency services over any available network, even one your plan does not normally use. Newer iPhones and some Android phones can also contact emergency services by satellite where there is no signal at all.

Picking a plan for a road trip

Road trips often use less data than city breaks if you rely on offline maps, but long drives with music streaming add up. For one to two weeks, 10–20 GB is comfortable for most people; see our data guide and the USA eSIM plans.

Frequently asked questions

Will my eSIM work in national parks?

Usually in park villages, lodges and visitor centers, but often not on trails or remote roads. Download offline maps and park information before you go.

Does navigation work without signal?

Yes, if you download offline maps in Google Maps before you lose coverage.

Can I call 911 without coverage on my network?

Phones can usually reach 911 over any available network. Where there is no signal at all, some newer phones can contact emergency services by satellite.
